Responsibilities

 

  • Actively plan and assist in the development and execution of AHF advocacy related legislative activities for all levels of government.
  • Maintain a NYC based volunteer pool to help assist with AHF spearheaded community events throughout the five boroughs and grassroots policy activations.  
  • Once a month coordinate a volunteer gathering for the purposes of keeping volunteers/advocates abreast on upcoming events and advocacy priorities.
  • Interact with the AHF healthcare center staff and pharmacy business lines to build client engagement on AHF community events and legislative issues.
  • Organize and execute grassroots correspondence as it relates to AHF's advocacy goals.
  • Participate in annual events as needed with the larger AHF domestic advocacy team.
  • Mobilize volunteers and the larger community for demonstrations as it relates to AHF's advocacy priorities.
  • Be able to travel to DC at least twice a year for lobby day(s) on specific AHF policy focuses. 
  • Devote a minimum of 25 hours per week to community mobilizer responsibilities.
  • Liaise with Jessica Reinhart (Associate Dir. of Community Outreach), Tracy Jones (Nat’l Director of Advocacy Campaigns), Marlene LaLota (Sr. NYC Regional Director) and other AHF staff as needed.
  • Advocate for AHF with local providers, community organizations and similar personnel for the purpose of information gathering and coalition building. 
  • Keep abreast of the HIV policy agenda in NYC and relay information to appropriate AHF Northeast staff as needed.
  • Keep up to date on the legislative and policy platform for ending the epidemic by 2020 in New York
  • Attend HIV prevention and care meetings and other relative governmental planning bodies

Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A desire for political change.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative.
  • Previous field or canvassing experience is a plus.

Computer/Software Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software.
  • Proficiency with internet search and electronic mail use.
  • Ability to effectively present information in both written and oral forms.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to travel within respective area.
  • Needs to be sensitive to issues impacting vulnerable populations.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities when leading events and managing volunteers in accordance with AHF’s policies and procedures.
