The Laboratory Technician III is responsible for projecting and integrating the Mission and Core Values of the organization within and outside of the Public Health Division.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Includes the following.  Other duties may be assigned

  • The Laboratory Technician III contributes to several ongoing projects by maintaining and operating 2 diagnostic machines (Abbott Architect i1000r and a Cepheid GeneXpert Infinity), and other equipment that tests for: HIV antigen/antibody; viral hepatitis; Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoaeae’ and HIV viral RNA.  
  • Performs other diagnostic assays as they become available.
  • Functions as a liaison with vendor support services and AHF Information Technology Department as needed.
  • Receives and processes blood and other potential infectious material by following established standard operating procedures (SOP) and bio-safety regulation working in a BL2 laboratory.
  • Ensures all specimens waiting to be processed are safely handled and stored properly in accordance to the FDA’s manufacturers insert.
  • Ensures specimens are processed within proper timeframes, ensures the results are entered into the electronic medical record in a timely and accurate manner and reviews and maintains accurate specimen manifests.
  • Conducts safe handling, shipping, and receiving of Category A infectious material and Category B potentially infectious material in accordance with United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) requirements.
  • Conducts safe handling of blood and other potential infectious material (OPIM) in accordance to Title 8 CCR 5193 (bloodborne pathogens).
  • Complies with AHF’s policies and practices relating to the confidentiality, privacy, and security of protect health information.
  • Maintains accurate operational and temperature logs.
  • Oversees the organization and cleanliness of work and supply stock areas.
  • Ensures all supplies and inventory are stored neatly, in a safe manner, and at designated temperatures.
  • Ensures all time sensitive supplies and inventory are used prior to expiration dates.
  • Orders supplies as needed and ensure all materials are used in a cost-effective manner.
  • Prepares monthly inventory and diagnostic results reports.
  • Ensure all necessary certifications are valid and up to date.
  • Immediately reports to supervisor any known deviations from established policies or procedures.
  • Oversee operations of LabDaq LIS system and connectivity to laboratory instruments

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience

  • Certified manufacture training on Abbott Architect i1000
  • 2 years experience running HIV and viral hepatitis specimens on Abbott Architect i1000
  • Certified manufacture training on LabDaq LIS system
  • 2 years of experience with CLIA requirements and inspections
  • Experience with third party laboratory proficiency testing
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program with certification required.
  • Phlebotomy Certification Preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of related work experience required.

Computer/Software Skills & Abilities
Should have a high level of computer literacy in both PC and MAC.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel.
Ability to conduct in a professional manner when use of company e-mail is required.

Other Skills & Abilities/Qualifications

  • Must be able to travel locally and to other States a minimum of 10% of the time.
  • Experience working within communities of high-risk populations.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and have a sensitivity to multi-cultural and lifestyle issues.  
  • Sensitivity to the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS.
  • Ability to improve and promote quality and demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

  • Hold a current Florida license as a Laboratory Technician as outlined in 64B3-5.004 of the Florida Administrative Code
  • The following training will be provided and must be completed within 30 days of hire date:
  1. Category 6, Division 6.2 Shipping Infectious Substances/Dangerous Goods.
  2. Biosafety A, B, Cs – Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2).
  3. Medical Waste Management.
  4. Blood borne Pathogens (BBP).
  5. Shipping Biological Material.
  • Medical Assistant Certification required
  • Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license in state of employment required with proof of liability insurance.
